The Epes Randolph Plaza honors its namesake's instrumental role in bringing the railroad to Tucson, an achievement that fundamentally shaped the small town's transformation into a city of more than a million residents today.
Large, native mesquites surround the Plaza, creating a vital sense of place where patterned brick, flagstone and railroad rails form a circle 36' in diameter, supporting benches created with train wheels and slabs of stone.
The completed space marks a successful collaboration between my business, Nick Burke, who created the bust of Epes Randolph at the center, the local homeowners association, the City of Tucson, Union Pacific Railroad and the Colorado Rockies who, at the time, did spring training in nearby Reid Park.
